At this rate, I'll never...

...Finish any of my writing projects.

Of course I'm in the rewrite stages (as ever), but as it's said no story is ever done...well, you know.

I've been giving myself a hard time about NOT writing at all, but then I realize as per Facebook and baby journaling, I do write everyday. When I say or think of something clever I try to immortalize it in FB or write it down in one of my various tossed about writing pads.

More importantly, I think I'm resisting 'finishing' either project because I'm torn about which one is 'me'.

It's like the time my friends encouraged me to place a personal ad on Craigslist YEARS ago (hey, it's how I met my husband), but I had to write TWO postings that equally represented me BUT were different. One, the granola girl, the other, the wild child.

Both were true, but how can I ever choose only one over the other?

My current dilemma: YA fantasy versus humorous Women's fiction. Both equal escapism, so at least that's in common.

After seeing the recently posted finalists on ABNA year three, I realize neither of these paths will likely ever win me that contest. I just write the 'wrong' genre for Penguin, I guess.

I'm still a tad hung up on the fact the PW reviewer used words like 'enjoyable' , 'entertaining' and that my use of first person enhanced character development. These mean I'm at least good at writing, right?

Now I seriously need to be dedicated in carving out the time to use these mad writing skills of mine and 'finish' something.

Okay, my rambling vent for the night is complete.

Thanks for listening.

Peace

A Pink American

  1. Just curious - are you a Gemini?

Deciding which project to concentrate on is not an easy task. In a way, I side-stepped it by forcing myself to work on two projects at once. It helps to be in a writing group where they expect something new from you at each meeting. That forces you to write at least a little, and to stick with one thing because writing group people get antsy when you keep throwing new, incomplete projects at them.

OWW doesn't quite fit the bill, because you can always blow it off. Those people will be there whenever you decide to post something. Unless you join a crit-for-crit group, which functions like an in-person writing group and they expect regular installments.

But that's my only idea. Get a few people who are counting on new pages from you on a regular basis (for one project - doesn't matter which one) and go for it. It will at least get you writing something.

  2. Hey Marlene,

Well, I'm not a Gemini, I'm a Capricorn, so that may explain my torn loyalty issues.

I'm on hiatus from my writing group right now due to baby.

They want me back, but I need to dedicate time to write so I have something to bring to them.

They all follow me on Facebook, though, and comment on my posts there, so that kind of counts.

I've just got itchy writer's fingers.

Thanks for reading my vent and thanks for the advice :)
