This post is dedicated to my ladies who are in the process of embracing their renewed singleton status...
I was flipping through this last Sunday's Parade Magazine (yeah, you know that funny little insert many never read beyond the open Q and A section) and skimmed through the article on longevity.
This wasn't one of those typical articles about eating well, no indeed.
Rather it was a mythbusting article about things you THINK are supposed to be good for you, but really may not be.
Six myths were considered including: marriage, relaxing, worrying, education, socializing, and athleticism.
Surprises? Yes and no.
However, it was the first myth to be 'busted' that drew in my attention.
As someone with education in psychology and sociology, I'm VERY aware of the factoid that when who divorce are almost always the worse off for it, particularly in a financial sense.
The stats at one point said a woman who was financially dependent on her husband SHOULD expect her financial quality of life to diminish up to 75% once out on her own...even if she does find work (that's when the glass ceiling and $.76 to a $1 value for work gender factor kicks in).
This is one of many reasons given that women, even in bad marriages, might choose to stay rather than divorce.
Another thing we've often heard is people who are married live longer.
So in addition to giving up financial security, women give up years on their lives...or do they?
That was the first myth busted in the Parade article.
It's really men that benefit from the steadiness of marriage.
But you all know that.
What's more interesting is that women who divorce and never remarry do just fine...and in most cases, usually live longer lives than their steadily married counterparts or those who divorce then remarry.
Now, all my renewed single ladies, go read the rest of that article to find out what else you can do to make the most of those extra years of not just life, but of LIVING!
Peace,
A Pink American
